CHICKEN
DINNER
When Johnnie was a boy,
about nine or ten, One of his many pets
was a Dominick hen.
He would sit on a
rock by the hen house stand;
The chick
would come running and eat corn from his hand.
Then she would sing her little song, happy
as a sage.
John felt like a lion tamer
with a tiger in a cage.
Now the circuit
riding preacher came calling on the
town. The folks would crowd to hear him for
many miles around. After a fine sermon he
was asked by Johnnie's dad To share their
Sunday dinner, no finer could be
had.
The family sat at the table, all
the women, kids and men, When Mom brought in
the main course, a delicious roasted
hen.
 The preacher ate five
pieces, brought out his gold toothpick.
John ran to the bathroom, for he was
deathly sick. His mother, searching for a
hen, found one really fat, The pet that ate
the corn from where her boy sat. Many years
have passed and John is un-churched yet, For
he still remembers that the preacher ate his
pet.
